Palliative and End-of-Life Care

Gifford offers significant palliative and end-of-life care options.

Palliative Medicine
Palliative medicine is designed for anyone with a serious illness that has the potential to shorten the patient’s life, such as cancer, dementia, heart disease, COPD, liver disease, renal failure, stroke, cystic fibrosis, congenital malformations and extreme prematurity. Palliative medicine goes beyond treating a disease. It focuses on providing relief from symptoms, pain and the stress associated with having a serious illness. It involves listening to patients so their treatment is aligned with what is important to them. It works to enhance the patient’s, as well as his or her family’s or caregiver’s, quality of life.

Palliative care is offered early and throughout an illness. It doesn’t mean foregoing curative treatments. And it doesn’t mean giving up your primary care provider to meet with a palliative care physician. It is rather an extra layer of care from specially trained or specially certified palliative care physicians.

Gifford has three palliative care physicians available to aid you in understanding your illness and treatment options and to align those treatment options with your goals. Ask your provider for a referral. Palliative care providers are also available for inpatient consultations.

End-of-Life Care
End-of-life care often focuses on Gifford's Garden Room, a special hospital suite for dying patients and their families. Thanks to expert care and free services made possible by Gifford's Last Mile Ride charity motorcycle event, end-of-life patients receive high-quality comfort care both in the hospital and at home.

A Gifford provider can refer a patient for a palliative/end-of-life consult and can request assistance through the Last Mile Ride fund.
