Aloha … from BetheRandolph resident Jan Fowler coming to Gifford Gallery

RANDOLPH, Nov. 13, 2008Randolph resident Jan Fowler presents her first exhibit of oil and watercolor paintings Dec. 3 through Jan. 7 in the Gifford Medical Center art gallery.

Fowler grew up painting oils as a child and young adult. She majored in fine art for her first three years of college before abandoning the major and changing schools.

For many years she fulfilled her desire to paint by designing gardens, including Gifford’s own stunning courtyard gardens. The practice employed much of the same knowledge she used painting, including arranging space and working with texture and color, only this time in three dimensions.

Five year ago, Fowler found herself yearning to pick up a brush again, and since she has returned to the oil paints she loved and has even been taking lessons. She tries to paint daily, she notes.

This summer she started painting outdoors on location, finding inspiration from being so intimately involved in landscape.

She’s found happiness and solace in nature her entire life. The beauty she sees around her, whether it’s the desert Southwest, European villages or her own Green Mountains, where she’s lived for the past 35 years, move her, she says.

“The chance to express how I feel about these places in paint and color is something that makes me feel alive,” Fowler says. “Being an artist isn’t just about paints and canvas; it’s about a response to life.”

Fowler is the wife of Gifford internal medicine physician Dr. Milt Fowler. She has two sons, Ben and Mark. The latter is an avid photographer who occasionally provides her with subject matter.

The Gifford Gallery is open daily. To see Fowler’s free show, visit the hospital at 44 S. Main St. (Route 12) in Randolph. The gallery is just inside the main hospital entrance and to the left. Call the hospital at (802) 728-7000 for more information, including directions.
