Aloha … from BethC Gifford raises money for March of Dimes

Midwife Kathryn Saunders
now seeing patients at Gifford

RANDOLPH, June 21, 2010 An experienced certified nurse midwife with a strong commitment to the midwifery philosophy has joined Gifford Medical Center’s robust, like-minded practice.

Kathryn Saunders, who previously practiced at Central Vermont Medical Center, has joined Gifford Ob/Gyn and Midwifery in Randolph and Berlin.

Saunders spent nearly six years at Central Vermont Medical Center, where she says she created and grew the nurse-midwifery practice. Previously, she was an obstetrics nurse at the same hospital.

She is a graduate of the Frontier School of Midwifery in Kentucky and also holds a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst as a pediatric nurse practitioner. Her bachelor’s degree is in nursing from Norwich University in Northfield.

She is board certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) and a member of the Vermont Chapter of the ACNM. She has also worked as a volunteer at the People’s Health and Wellness Clinic in Barre and did her clinical education to become a pediatric nurse practitioner throughout Vermont, where she has lived for the last 25 years.

She joins Gifford Ob/Gyn and Midwifery for the opportunity to work at a medical center that embraces the midwifery philosophy. Saunders describes that philosophy as caring for the whole woman and the belief that pregnancy and birth are natural processes.

Saunders calls Gifford a place that allows “true midwifery care,” where she is so excited to work.

“It’s great,” she said. “I really appreciate the collaborative atmosphere and the philosophy of care, and look forward to sharing this amazing experience with the women of central Vermont.”

Saunders lives in Calais with her husband, dairy farmer David Morse, and her youngest daughter, Valerie, a Vermont Technical College dairy management student. Saunders has seven children altogether, ages 19-35. Her free time is spent working on the farm and also cooking, reading, gardening and riding horses.

Saunders is available at both Gifford’s Randolph office and the Gifford Health Center at Berlin, located just off Airport Road. To schedule an appointment with Saunders or learn more, call her at Gifford at (802) 728-2401.
