Aloha … from BethC Gifford raises money for March of Dimes

Experienced manager takes
Radiology Department helm

RANDOLPH, April 26, 2010 Gifford Medical Center has welcomed an experienced new manager to oversee its extensive Radiology Department.

Steven Votey has worked as a radiologytechnologist in the U.S. Air Force, New Jersey and then in Maine for the last 22 years. In Maine, Votey was on the staff of Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor for seven years and then joined Blue Hill Memorial Hospital in 1995 as a staff radiology and CT technologist for 10 years and then diagnostic imaging manager since 2005.

His new position at Gifford is similar to his manager role in Maine. Both hospitals are 25-bed critical access hospitals with similar diagnostic imaging modalities, including X-rays, CT scans, ultrasound, digital mammography, MRI and bone density scans.

Votey grew up in New Jersey and received his two-year radiology technologist training in the military at the U.S. Air Force School of Health Care Sciences at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

He served four years of active duty before returning to his native New Jersey. Maine had always been a place that Votey visited while growing up and his love of a family cabin on Green Lake in Ellsworth, Maine, brought him north.

Leaving a state he so loves to come to Vermont was difficult for Votey, but Gifford offered an allure too good to pass up – financial stability.

Gifford has avoided the layoffs and budget shortfalls faced by many other hospitals. “For 10 years in a row, Gifford has made budget. After what this country has been through, that is remarkable.

“I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity. Gifford does a great job and I’ve been impressed so far,” Votey said.

And Gifford is impressed with Votey.

“Steve is a seasoned radiology manager. He consistently practices service excellence and strives to make each and every patient experience a positive one,” said Andrea Mc-Gill O’Rourke, Gifford’s vice president of operations.

Other factors that brought Votey to Gifford include its large radiology volume, community hospital model and friendly staff.

Votey is now making the community his own. He is moving into a home in Braintree with his wife. His two children are grown and live in Arizona, and he has a stepson serving in the U.S. Air Force and currently stationed in Japan. In his free time, Votey enjoys the outdoors, especially swimming, boating and kayaking.
