RANDOLPH, Oct. 2, 2009 – Health care workers do it in their sleeve. And they want you to do it too. Sneeze, that is.
The concept of sneezing or coughing into your sleeve to help prevent the spread of the flu made headlines when U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius reprimanded NBC White House reporter Chuck Todd for sneezing into his hand during a press conference.
Now one Vermont hospital is taking the message to the streets, literally. Gifford Medical Center in Randolph has created a bumper sticker and magnet with the slogan “Health care workers do it in their sleeve.”
“Anything that we as medical professionals can do to increase the public consciousness of the importance of basic flu prevention steps like washing your hands frequently and sneezing or coughing into your sleeve is good public policy,” said the hospital’s president, Joseph Woodin.
“We’re just having a bit of fun with it. Maybe we’ll mail one to Mr. Todd,” Woodin said.
The bumper stickers are available in limited quantities at the hospital.
