RANDOLPH, March 11, 2009 Gifford Medical Center’s outstanding team of professional chefs is once again offering Healthy Cooking Classes. The classes begin in April and are possible thanks to a grant from the hospital’s William and Mary Markle Community Foundation. The grant helps subsidize the cost of the classes to participants.

Gifford buys local produce and serves patients and staff healthy, fresh options that rival restaurant fare. Gifford chefs Ed Striebe and Steve Morgan are also both former New England Culinary Institute instructors, who in 2007 started sharing their healthy cooking techniques with the community through these classes.

“We are so excited that our staff is able to offer these classes and help the community realize that healthy cooking doesn’t have to be a chore nor does it have to be labor intensive,” Gifford chef Ed Striebe says. “With a little guidance and fun, we can bring the healthy cooking methods we use at the hospital to the community.”

Upcoming classes are: Bread Basics on April 3, Tapas on May 15, Healthy Sauces and Sides on Aug. 14 and Healthy Desserts on Sept. 11.

The classes are from 6-9 p.m., cost $35 each, are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and are limited to eight people. Participants will experience a hands-on workshop, will receive giveaways and get to eat what they cook during class. Students are also asked to bring notebooks to record what they learn.

The classes will fill up fast. Register today by calling 728-2373 or e-mail Catering Coordinator Ruthie Adams at radams@giffordmed.org.
