Aloha … from BethC Gifford raises money for March of Dimes

Free programs teach positive parenting, teacher/student relations

Early childhood expert Becky Bailey's techniques coming to Gifford

RANDOLPH, July 21, 2010 Two programs based on the work of Becky Bailey, Ph.D., will be offered at Gifford Medical Center on July 29.

“I Love You Rituals with Infants and Toddlers” will take place from 10 a.m. to noon and “Conscious Discipline” will be held in the evening from 6-8 p.m. in the Gifford conference Center.

Both programs are presented by Ellen Perry Kaji, an early childhood consultant, and are based on Bailey’s work. Bailey is an award-winning author, a teacher and an internationally recognized expert in childhood education and developmental psychology. She is the founder of Loving Guidance Inc., a company dedicated to creating positive environments for children, families, schools and businesses, and she is the developer of the Conscious Discipline program.

Conscious Discipline seeks to shift adult thinking from wanting an “obedient” child to creating a productive member of the family or classroom. The program was originally created for schools around the concept of a “school family,” according to Bailey’s Web site, www.consciousdiscipline.com. Each member of the family — both adult and child — learns the skills needed to successfully manage life tasks, such as learning, forming relationships, communicating effectively, being sensitive to others’ needs and getting along with others.

The program has since been expanded to family interactions, and even to businesses.

On July 29 at Gifford, the morning “I Love You Rituals” session will be targeted to parents or caregivers of infants and toddlers. Participants will learn Bailey’s techniques for building connections that send the message of unconditional love to children.

The session will cover playful songs and activities parents and their young children can learn together to boost brain potential, encourage cooperation and caring, promote learning and literacy, and increase attention and decrease power struggles.

The evening session for parents, teachers and early childhood professionals focuses on the Conscious Discipline program to provide systematic changes that, in part, address the challenging emotional and social issues of today’s children.

Participants will also learn Bailey’s “I Love You Rituals” bonding activities and songs.

Both programs are free. Call Nancy Clark at Gifford at (802) 728-2274 to register or for more information. The Conference Center is located on the first floor of the medical center at 44 S. Main St. in Randolph.
